We are the Lamu youth. The program was started by Omar Ali, on February 2nd of 2009. Trash had built up in the town to the point where they said there was no beach in Lamu because the beach was covered in trash.

Then we started to realize that we can clean up and do something beautiful with all this. Me and my friend Hasa Nobu, went to the beach and started cleaning up. Then we contacted the captains of the boats and they liked the idea. That helped us to motivate the people around. If they werent' helping with the work of clean up, they would be sending meals, fish, or refreshments to encourage us to keep up the good work we were doing.

Pretty soon, quite a few of the youth in the area were coming and helping us to clean up. That prompted the idea of the recycling program. We basically had no idea on where to put the trash. We were getting all kinds of stuff such as plastic bottles, glass, clothing, etc. We realized that there was not a landfill in the island so we started using the materials to create art, jewelry and other items. This furthered the project even more giving space to creativity from the locals to make things that later can be sold in Kenya or elsewhere like the United States.

That is in a nutshell how the program got started. We hope that you will help us to continue bringing this to the people of Lamu Island and other places in Africa. Our project aims to expand to other places and we are also receiving tourists to come and act as volunteers to help us even more.
